Behind The Design: Girls' Holiday

About the time you were on the hunt for the perfect pint-sized Easter dress last spring, we were busy putting the finishing touches on our girls’ holiday dresses for 2011. Yes, the holidays will be here before you know it, and with so many special occasions on the agenda, we are anxious to unveil our new girls’ dresses for holiday. But first, we thought it fun to take you behind the design-- giving you a closer look at a carefully crafted collaboration between Laura Ashley and veteran design house Pastourelle.

You may not recognize the name, but if you have a little princess at home, chances are you’re familiar with the work. Pastourelle Owner and Designer Fran Arazi has been the brains behind the beauty in girls’ dresses for over a decade at many of the shops you frequent (and too many to name). We think, in many ways similar to Laura Ashley herself—a devoted wife and mother and accomplished designer of beautiful feminine styles. And lucky for us, Fran always loved the brand and admired Laura Ashley as a person and a designer.

It was the birth of Fran’s daughter Julia that inadvertently sparked her career as a designer. While living in Israel and working as a psychologist, Fran found inspiration in the beautiful baby gifts given to Julia. Fran embraced the opportunity to sell such fine cotton dresses in the U.S. and quickly launched her business from home with the help of her family (a start we can appreciate).

Today, Fran’s daughter continues to influence the business. Julia, whose profession as an actress affords her the flexibility to contribute to the business, said “The best part of the family business is just that-- working with my mom and watching her shine.” Take a peek inside the charming office they share in NYC—just full of lovely, inspiring things.

So where does Fran find her inspiration? Well, she loves to travel and frequents flea markets and antique shops. Her absolute favorite spot, Les Puces in Paris.

Oh, the new collection? Well you’ll have to wait, but just for a bit. To whet your appetite, we offer you a look at one of Fran’s sketches and the inspiration for the new looks still to come.
